wall project

The wall project examined what "poche" space may encompass, challenging students with specific location and dimension requirements as well as certain functional aspects within the wall. This design breaks the specifications for the project with reasoning to provide the viewer the optimal experience. This project features three separate platforms to view stars during the winter, fall/spring, and summer. Six wires surround the structure; one wire for highlighting the celestial equator and the other for the moon path, two for each platform. Smaller wires outline viewable constellations at 10:00 pm during the winter/summer solstices and spring/fall equinoxes.

oculus

Students were assigned a client with a specific hobby, designing living space within the Kennard Building and a space for the hobbyist to perform the hobby. This project features a space designed for a birdwatcher. As birding is more than merely watching, the design aims to enhance the audio experience through an opening in the roof of the building's top level. A glass "capsule" separates the interior from the exterior while a multi-material dome sits atop the roof. The dome is comprised of three layers, the first providing a place to store bird food and for birds to exist. A large wire structure outfitted with canvas shades the interior, protects the food, and supports the third and top layer. The thin concrete dome is the third layer which reflects bird chirps into the capsule, much like the acoustic mirror in Kent, England.
